Dissociative Disorders

There are two main types of dissociative disorders, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID, also commonly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) and Dissociative Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (DDNOS).  These are characterized by childhood experiences of trauma that are so persistent and severe, the mind has to split itself into different "parts" in order to cope--- think of it like different hard drives on a computer.

With DDNOS, these "parts" are generally aware of each other and experienced as part of one unified consciousness.

Whereas with DID, the boundaries between "parts" tend to be more solid and they are experienced as separate consciousnesses, who may or may not be aware of each other.
